India launches country’s largest deep-water port in Maharashtra State
Sat 31 Aug 2024NEW DELHI: The foundation stone for India’s largest deep-water port, Vadhvan, has been laid in Palghar, Maharashtra state of India. This major project is set to enhance India’s maritime capabilities and boost its global trade profile.
Vadhvan Port aims to become one of the top 10 ports in the world. It will be an all-weather, deep-draft port designed to transform maritime trade and establish India as a significant player in global shipping.
After being delayed for years, the Vadhvan Port project is back on track and expected to start operating by 2030. The port will feature nine 1,000-metre-long container terminals, multipurpose berths, liquid cargo berths, Ro-Ro berths, and a dedicated Coast Guard berth.
This new infrastructure will position Vadhvan as a key maritime hub, capable of handling global trade with great efficiency. The port will have a total capacity of 298 million metric tonnes per year and will serve as India’s gateway to international trade. Located in the Arabian Sea, it will establish important trade connections with regions such as the Far East, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and America, significantly expanding India’s global trade reach.
India’s deep-water ports are vital for its trade and economy. These ports are built to handle large ships and large amounts of cargo, making it easier to connect with global markets. Major ports like Mumbai, Chennai, and Vishakhapatnam have advanced facilities to manage big container ships, bulk carriers, and oil tankers. Their locations along India’s coast help them serve as important points for imports and exports, linking India with trade routes across the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.
