The UAE has reiterated support for Kuwait’s maritime sovereignty, expressing concern over Iraq’s submitted coordinates affecting disputed waters.
ABU DHABI: The UAE has reaffirmed its full support for Kuwait’s sovereignty, stressing solidarity over maritime rights following concerns raised about recent submissions to the United Nations.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs underscored the country’s unwavering backing of measures undertaken by Kuwait to safeguard its legitimate rights and national interests. The UAE reaffirmed solidarity with Kuwait over maritime sovereignty and rejected any infringement on Kuwait’s territorial or maritime claims.
The Ministry also expressed deep concern regarding the list of coordinates and accompanying map submitted by Iraq to the United Nations. According to the statement, the move could have implications for Kuwait’s rights over certain maritime areas and waters, including Fisht Al-Eid and Fisht Al-Eij.
Officials highlighted the importance of respecting long-standing fraternal and historic ties between Iraq and Kuwait. The UAE reaffirmed solidarity with Kuwait over maritime sovereignty while calling on Iraq to approach the matter with responsibility and seriousness.
The Ministry stressed that any discussions should be conducted in accordance with international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982, as well as existing bilateral agreements and memoranda of understanding between the two countries.
Furthermore, the UAE called for constructive dialogue and diplomatic engagement to resolve related issues. It emphasised that peaceful discussions would contribute to strengthening regional security and stability.
The renewed diplomatic position reflects the UAE’s consistent stance on supporting Gulf cooperation and safeguarding the sovereignty of member states. Observers note that the statement aims to encourage dialogue while reinforcing established legal frameworks governing maritime boundaries in the region.
