The new fish species discovered in Kerala has gained international attention thanks to Hollywood actor and environmental campaigner Leonardo DiCaprio.

Earlier this week, DiCaprio used Facebook to inform his devoted following about a new aquatic species that was accidentally discovered in Kerala.

“The wild is all around us and sometimes all it takes to discover a new species is going about a normal day. This was the case for Mr Abraham, a local stage director living in Kerala State, who discovered a new species of fish while taking a shower,” wrote DiCaprio. Abraham discovered the “live sightless subterranean freshwater fish like the new Pathalal Eel Loach”.

“Pathalal Eel Loach” is Sanskrit for “below the feet”.

The ‘Titanic star’ continued to explain how this fish frequently dwells beneath the soil’s surface, hidden from light and living in dimly lit areas. He also published an essay describing Abraham’s revolutionary finding, which has the scientific community abuzz.

Abraham, a local stage decorator from Chengannur in Kerala, reportedly saw this rare freshwater fish while taking a morning shower next to his well.

According to a report, Abraham grabbed the nearest glass jar and put the animal inside. He reportedly summoned the scientists from the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies after putting the container away. Later, three more fish of the same species were discovered by the researchers in Abraham’s 17-foot well.

Abraham has now become the toast of researchers who study species of underground fish.
