India creates 109 types of high-yield GM crop seeds
Mon 12 Aug 2024NEW DELHI: India has recently introduced 109 new GM crop seed varieties designed to boost crop yields, withstand changing climates, and improve nutritional value. These seeds, covering both agricultural and horticultural crops, aim to increase farm productivity and, ultimately, farmers’ income.
These new genetically modified seed varieties were developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and include 61 different crops. Among these, there are 34 types of field crops, such as grains and pulses, and 27 horticultural crops, including fruits and vegetables.
The seeds were officially launched at Delhi’s Pusa Campus, a hub for agricultural research by the Prime Minister of India. During the event, he visited three experimental agriculture plots and spent time talking with both farmers and scientists. This hands-on approach highlights the government’s commitment to improving the agricultural sector. In his discussions with farmers, the Prime Minister emphasised the importance of adding value to agriculture, which goes beyond just growing crops. He pointed out that these new GM seed varieties are not just about higher yields but also about improving the overall quality and resilience of crops. This, in turn, can help farmers adapt to changing weather conditions and reduce their farming costs.
Farmers who were present at the event expressed their optimism about these new GM seeds. They believe that these varieties will be particularly useful because they require lower input costs, meaning farmers can spend less on things like fertilisers and pesticides while still getting good results.
