ABU DHABI: After years of anticipation, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi finally has an opening date. The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has announced that the landmark museum will welcome its first visitors on December 11, 2026, adding another major attraction to Saadiyat Cultural District and further cementing Abu Dhabi’s reputation as one of the world’s fastest-growing cultural capitals.
The museum has been designed as much more than an art gallery. It aims to be a place where people from different cultures can come together, exchange ideas and experience modern and contemporary art in fresh and meaningful ways. Alongside international masterpieces, the museum will also spotlight stories from the UAE and the wider region, giving visitors a broader perspective on how art has evolved across the world.

The opening also strengthens Saadiyat Cultural District, which is quickly becoming one of the most important cultural hubs anywhere. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will join Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, creating an impressive collection of museums within one destination.
The Guggenheim name is already one of the most recognised in the art world. It all began in New York, where the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum opened in 1959 in its now-famous spiral building designed by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Over the decades, the Guggenheim expanded beyond the US with museums in Venice and Bilbao, Spain, becoming known for showcasing some of the world’s most influential modern and contemporary artists. Abu Dhabi will now become the latest city to join that global network, bringing its own identity and regional perspective to the collection.

Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, called the opening “a defining moment” in the emirate’s cultural journey. He said the museum reflects Abu Dhabi’s belief that culture can bring people together while creating new opportunities for learning, creativity and cultural exchange.
Dr. Mariët Westermann, Director and CEO of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, said the museum’s collection will be both local and global, featuring works from the region alongside art from every continent. She added that the museum is being created as “a source of wonder, a hub of connection, and a place of curiosity and joy” for visitors from the UAE and around the world.
Designed by the late Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry, the building is set to become one of Abu Dhabi’s most recognisable landmarks. Located on Saadiyat Island, it features 30 galleries linked by a central atrium and ten striking sculptural cones that rise up to 88 metres. The design is not just eye-catching. The cones also help cool the building naturally by providing ventilation and shade, making the museum more energy efficient.
Sheikha Latifa highlights museums’ role in connecting diverse communities
Covering 11,600 square metres of indoor gallery space and another 23,000 square metres for outdoor exhibitions, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi has been building its permanent collection since 2009. Visitors can expect exhibitions exploring themes such as abstraction, storytelling, popular culture, language and land, offering a fresh way to experience the art of the past six decades.
