The Moon Venus conjunction created a striking spectacle over Assam as the slender crescent appeared alongside brilliant Venus on September 14.

GUWAHATI: The Moon Venus occultation delivered a memorable celestial spectacle across Assam on Monday, September 14, as the young waxing crescent Moon appeared remarkably close to bright Venus before passing in front of the planet from Earth’s perspective.

The sight attracted attention among skywatchers, with photographs and videos from Assam showing Venus extremely close to the lunar crescent. Local observers in Guwahati also shared images of the event online after watching the two celestial objects converge in the evening sky.

What exactly happened over Assam?

The spectacle was more than an attractive planetary pairing.

A lunar occultation of Venus occurred on September 14, 2026. During such an event, the Moon passes between Earth and Venus, temporarily hiding the planet from view for observers positioned within the occultation’s visibility path.

The event was visible from parts of Europe, north-eastern Africa, the Middle East and Asia, with southern Asian observers able to see it around dusk. Outside the occultation path, observers could still see an exceptionally close pairing of the Moon and Venus.

In Assam, conditions placed the event close to sunset. In Guwahati, sunset occurred at about 5:28pm, while astronomical calculations showed the Moon as a thin waxing crescent, around 9% illuminated.

That combination made the Moon Venus occultation particularly striking as daylight faded.

Why did Venus look so bright?

Venus is commonly known as the Evening Star or Morning Star because of its exceptional apparent brightness, although it is a planet rather than a star.

Its highly reflective cloud cover helps make Venus the brightest planet seen from Earth. When positioned close to a thin lunar crescent, its brightness creates a dramatic visual contrast.

The September 14 event was especially unusual because Venus did not simply appear close to the Moon. From locations within the occultation path, the Moon actually passed across Venus from the observer’s perspective, causing the planet to disappear temporarily before re-emerging.

Observers across parts of India were able to watch the event around sunset where skies were sufficiently clear. Reports from southern India placed Venus disappearing behind the Moon at around 5:20pm and reappearing at approximately 6:45pm, although exact timings varied by location.

For Assam residents fortunate enough to have clear skies, the celestial event provided a photogenic moment and an accessible demonstration of how the movements of the Moon and planets can produce striking alignments in Earth’s sky.
