Meta VR Glasses combine built-in AI, 5K displays, immersive entertainment and a virtual workspace in a 100-gram design launching in 2027.

MENLO PARK: Meta has unveiled a new pair of lightweight virtual reality glasses with an integrated AI agent, describing the product as its “most advanced device yet” as it pushes immersive computing into a slimmer, glasses-style design.

Announced at Meta Connect 2026 on September 23, the Meta VR Glasses weigh about 100 grams and are designed for entertainment, gaming and work. Meta says the device will go on sale in spring 2027 for $1,299.99.

What makes Meta’s new VR glasses different?

Unlike conventional VR headsets with larger hardware strapped around the head, the glasses use a two-part system. The eyewear contains the displays and sensors, while a separate puck connected by an optical cable handles computing, battery and storage.

Meta says this approach makes the glasses around five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3.

The Meta VR Glasses feature micro-OLED panels powering what the company calls its 5K Infinite Display, alongside Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos spatial audio.

Built-in AI removes the need for controllers

A major feature is the integration of Meta’s AI agent directly into the operating system.

Users can speak to the glasses or use eye and hand gestures to launch applications, find information, play films and control their virtual workspace without conventional handheld controllers.

The device is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Reality Elite processor, while its external puck provides up to three hours of high-resolution media playback and supports 45W fast charging.

Meta wants to put a cinema on your face

Entertainment is another major part of Meta’s pitch. The company says its new glasses are the first IMAX Enhanced-certified VR device and will support 3D films and immersive viewing experiences.

Meta is working with entertainment and streaming companies including Disney+, YouTube, Prime Video and others to build its content library. It is also targeting live sport, with plans for more than 100 immersive sporting events annually after launch.

The Meta VR Glasses can additionally create multiple private virtual displays for work and turn a flat surface into a keyboard and touchpad.

Hologram calls add another futuristic feature

Meta also demonstrated hologram calling, which creates a photorealistic digital representation of the wearer for video conversations.

The company says the technology can work with calling services including WhatsApp and Zoom, with people using ordinary phones or computers able to see the user’s hologram on their screens.

Impact to expect

Competition. Meta’s lighter design and built-in AI could intensify competition around wearable computing as technology companies explore devices capable of taking everyday digital experiences beyond smartphones and traditional VR headsets.
