Since launching over two years ago, Google Wallet has become a popular tool for millions of people across 90 countries. It allows users to securely store and access various essentials, including payment cards, event tickets, and train passes. Adoption of digital wallets continues to grow, with a recent study showing that 70% of consumers in Brazil, France, Germany, the U.K., and the U.S. use them.
Google Wallet is now introducing new features to enhance its functionality. One major addition is the ability to store digital IDs. Last year, Google Wallet began allowing select state-issued digital IDs to be saved. Soon, it will beta test a new feature that enables users to create and store a digital ID using a U.S. passport. This digital ID can be used at certain TSA checkpoints, making domestic travel more convenient.
To create a digital ID pass, users will select a prompt in the Google Wallet app, scan their passport’s security chip, and take a selfie video for identity verification. Google Wallet will notify users when their ID pass is ready, usually within minutes. Although digital IDs are currently accepted only at specific TSA checkpoints, future updates aim to expand their use to areas such as account recovery and car rentals. It’s important to note that a physical ID is still required while traveling.
Google Wallet ensures the safety of digital IDs through advanced Android security features. ID passes are encrypted and require authentication via fingerprint, PIN, or passcode before they can be accessed or shared. Users also have control over the information shared during identity verification.

Additionally, Google Wallet’s popularity for commuting has surged, with more people using it for transit. New features include the ability to save select prepaid commuter benefit cards in the U.S., and integration with transit systems in cities like Hamburg, Germany, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Upcoming updates will allow users to automatically import tickets from Gmail and view live train status updates directly in Google Wallet.
