UAE to deploy electric tug boats for greener maritime operations at Khalifa Port
ABU DHABI: In a bold move towards eco-friendly maritime operations, UAE-based Noatum Maritime—part of AD Ports Group—has announced the addition of two fully electric tug boats to its fleet at Khalifa Port. This marks a regional first and reflects the company’s strong push to reduce emissions and set new sustainability standards.
The introduction of these zero-emission tug boats is a crucial step in the firm’s wider decarbonisation strategy. These vessels not only promise enhanced operational efficiency but also support carbon credit initiatives and help customers meet their sustainability goals. One of the standout additions is the Damen RSD-E Tug 2513, which holds the title of the world’s most powerful electric tugboat according to Guinness World Records. These tugs deliver 70-tonne bollard pull power and come equipped with fast-charging technology that allows for full recharges in just two hours—enough to perform multiple harbour assignments per cycle.
Tug boats play a vital role in assisting larger ships with docking, undocking, and navigation in tight spaces. Traditionally diesel-powered, they are known for their strength but also their emissions. By shifting to electric tugs, Noatum Maritime is cutting down on fuel use, reducing maintenance needs, and slashing harmful emissions at port—a move that benefits both the environment and port efficiency.
In addition to the tugs, the company has also acquired the region’s first all-electric pilot boat, the Artemis EF-12. Thanks to its hydro-foiling design, it consumes up to 85% less energy, offering yet another green innovation on the water.
With these electric investments, Noatum Maritime is leading the region in sustainable port operations and proving that clean technology can also be high-performance and cost-effective.
