Over 40,000 beehives buzzing in Saudi Arabia reserve
Mon 12 Aug 2024RAFHA: The Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve is buzzing with excitement, literally! It’s now home to over 40,000 beehives spread across 400 sites in Saudi Arabia, all expertly managed by 140 dedicated beekeepers. This place is turning into the go-to spot for top-notch honey production, with beekeepers focusing on harvesting premium Talh and Sidr honey from the reserve’s sprawling 91,500 square kilometre playground.
Beekeeper Mufleh Al-Jabreen has a sweet spot for bees and their importance in nature. He’s not shy about sharing that these little guys are real superheroes of the ecosystem. “Bees are essential for pollinating flowers, boosting tree productivity, and improving seed quality,” he explains, adding that their hard work can ramp up flower pollination by as much as 70%.
Al-Jabreen also gave a big thumbs up to Talh and Sidr honey, which are famed for their wild, unique flavour and their ability to stay smooth and uncrystallised. The honey-making season is in full swing from April to October, so it’s a busy time for all the bee enthusiasts.
