China’s central bank will inject around US$73.6 billion into the banking system to ensure enough cash remains available for banks and businesses.

BEIJING: China’s central bank is preparing another massive cash injection into the country’s financial system.

The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) announced it will carry out a 500 billion yuan (around US$73.6 billion) outright reverse repo operation on Wednesday to keep enough money flowing through the banking sector.

If that sounds complicated, here’s what it means.

An outright reverse repo is one of the tools the central bank uses to make sure banks have enough cash to continue lending to businesses and consumers. By adding more money into the financial system, the PBOC aims to keep liquidity stable and prevent unnecessary pressure on borrowing costs.

The latest operation will have a three-month maturity and will be conducted through an interest-rate bidding process, where financial institutions compete for the funds.

The People’s Bank of China introduced outright reverse repo operations in October 2024 as part of its efforts to better manage liquidity in the country’s banking system. Since then, the operation has been carried out once every month.

The move comes as policymakers continue supporting China’s economic recovery while trying to maintain stability in financial markets.

Keeping enough liquidity in the banking system helps banks continue lending, supports business activity and gives policymakers another tool to respond to changing economic conditions.

While the operation doesn’t necessarily signal major concerns about the economy, it shows the central bank remains focused on ensuring financial markets have enough cash to function smoothly.
