Al Ain Zoo launches a specialised enclosure for the endangered Hippopotamus

AL AIN: As part of its varied projects to preserve the world’s endangered species, Al Ain Zoo has adopted a variety of animal welfare programmes with the aim of protecting and caring for the hippopotamuses that live within its specialised enclosures, all designed according to the highest standards of animal care and best global practices. 

Home to a group of 9 hippopotami, 3 residing within the hippopotamus exhibit, and 6 living within breeding groups enclosures, Al Ain Zoo offers these wonderful animals comprehensive care to the highest international standards, providing them with a healthy and varied diet and ample space resembling their natural habitat, in addition to health care provided by a team of expert veterinarian staff.

The Zoo welcomes visitors to the Hippo Exhibit, the first of its kind in the Middle East. The exhibit provides an enjoyable experience for visitors and a chance to find out more about the life of these huge mammals from their caregivers who are keen to tell the guests interesting stories about hippos’ behaviour and nature, including awareness-raising facts that shed light on the importance of protecting such beautiful endangered creatures.

The Zoo plays an important role in conserving many endangered species, including the hippopotamus, and is committed to protecting them by highlighting the importance of conservation and the prevention of habitat loss. The Zoo also sponsors several important international programmes for safeguarding species, conducting research on conserving, breeding, and distribution, as well as reintroducing endangered species into their natural habitats.
