Abu Dhabi: In a significant effort to help Sudan tackle its humanitarian crisis, the UAE has pledged to donate aid $8 million to the WHO. This funding, formalized at the WHO headquarters in Geneva, aims to improve health conditions for Sudanese people facing severe challenges.

The agreement, signed by Sultan Al Shamsi from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO’s Director-General, underscores the UAE’s commitment to global humanitarian aid. Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs, also attended the signing, emphasizing the UAE’s ongoing support for WHO’s critical work in Sudan.

This contribution is part of the UAE’s broader humanitarian initiatives, supporting WHO’s efforts to enhance healthcare infrastructure, emergency response capabilities, and disease prevention programs in conflict-affected areas of Sudan.

“The World Health Organisation plays a crucial role in saving lives daily in Sudan, and it’s vital to back this ongoing mission,” noted Lana Zaki Nusseibeh. “The UAE values its enduring partnership with WHO, benefiting crisis-affected populations across the region. We stand in solidarity with the people of Sudan.”

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus acknowledged, “With contributions from partners like the UAE, WHO will continue addressing urgent health needs for Sudanese and refugees in neighbouring countries. We appreciate the UAE’s generous commitment. Together, we must protect the most vulnerable.”

The UAE’s support for WHO is part of a broader pledge of $70 million to meet pressing humanitarian needs in Sudan through various UN agencies and relief organizations. This pledge forms a substantial portion of the UAE’s $100 million commitment announced in April at the ‘International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and Neighbouring Countries’. Over the past decade, UAE assistance to Sudan has exceeded $3.5 billion, reflecting its sustained dedication to aiding Sudanese communities in crisis.
