Wikimedia has announced new AI partnerships with major tech firms as it turns 25 and strengthens sustainable content use.
SAN FRANCISCO: The Wikimedia Foundation has announced a major expansion of its artificial intelligence partnerships as part of its 25th anniversary celebrations, naming global technology giants including Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI and Perplexity as new collaborators.
The partnerships are tied to Wikimedia Enterprise, the foundation’s commercial product designed to support the large-scale reuse and distribution of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia project content. The platform enables companies to access structured, reliable knowledge at the volume and speed required for modern AI systems and digital services.
While Wikimedia previously revealed a partnership with Google in 2022, it has now publicly confirmed for the first time that it has also been working over the past year with Amazon, Meta and Microsoft. Additional partners include Ecosia, Pleias, ProRata, Nomic and Reef Media, all of whom use Wikimedia Enterprise as paying customers.
These agreements provide Wikipedia with a sustainable revenue stream at a time when AI models increasingly rely on its content to deliver quick, factual responses to users. The foundation stressed that Wikimedia Enterprise is not just about payment, but about responsible access that respects its mission and volunteer-driven ecosystem.
In a blog post, the foundation highlighted Wikipedia’s global scale, noting it remains one of the world’s top 10 most visited websites. Audiences view more than 65 million articles across 300 plus languages, generating nearly 15 billion page views every month.
Selena Deckelmann, Wikimedia Foundation’s Chief Product and Technology Officer, said: “Wikipedia shows that knowledge is human, and knowledge needs humans. Especially now, in the age of AI, we need the human-powered knowledge of Wikipedia more than ever.”
Alongside the tech announcements, Wikimedia launched a birthday campaign featuring a new video docuseries spotlighting volunteers worldwide and a “25 Years of Wikipedia” digital time capsule narrated in part by founder Jimmy Wales. A global livestreamed celebration will take place on January, 15, across YouTube, TikTok and Instagram.
The foundation also revealed ongoing upgrades to its technology infrastructure, its own responsible AI approach, and new experiments including games and short-form video, signalling how Wikipedia plans to evolve while staying community-led.
