Peter Navarro says AI data centres powering users in India and China could raise US electricity bills, and Trump may take action soon.
WASHINGTON, D.C.: After rolling out tough trade tariffs, the Trump administration is now turning its focus to AI. More specifically, to the massive amount of electricity used by AI data centres. Senior adviser Peter Navarro says these centres are powering global demand, including in places like India and China, and American consumers could be footing the bill.
Speaking on Real America’s Voice, Navarro said President Trump is looking closely at how data centres inside the US are handling global traffic. He argued that running tools like ChatGPT for international users is putting extra pressure on the US power grid.
“We’re looking very, very carefully at this whole problem of AI data centres driving up the cost of electricity for Americans,” Navarro said. He hinted that Trump may soon announce new measures to address this.
AI data centres are growing fast and can use as much electricity as entire cities. With AI booming, power use is surging, and experts worry it could lead to higher bills across the board. Navarro said it was unfair for American energy users to carry the cost for overseas usage.
Although no official steps have been confirmed, discussions include shifting more of the cost to tech companies or possibly restricting how data centres serve users outside the US.
This push is part of Trump’s broader agenda to protect American households and industry from hidden costs in global technology trends. As AI continues to grow, energy and infrastructure could become the next big policy battleground.
