ABERDEEN: Scottish Fortnite streamer Cath Bowie has proved gaming has no age limit after being recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest female Fortnite streamer on Twitch. Bowie, who turned 78 on September 1, has spent nearly nine years playing the hugely popular game and now has more than 24,000 followers.
Known online as “grumpygran1948”, Bowie first discovered Fortnite in 2017 after seeing her then 17-year-old grandson playing. She had previously experimented with football and racing games, but Fortnite immediately caught her attention.
How did Cath Bowie become a Fortnite streamer?
After initially using her grandson’s console, Bowie created her own Fortnite account in 2018 and decided to begin streaming.
Her grandson was reportedly doubtful that viewers would tune in to watch his grandmother play. That reaction instead encouraged Bowie to give streaming a serious try. Years later, her Twitch following has grown beyond 24,000.
Bowie regularly spends hours streaming and says the experience is about much more than winning matches. The challenge, conversations and online community have become important parts of her gaming experience.
Why is she called grumpygran1948?
The memorable username was suggested by Bowie’s granddaughter. Despite the name, Bowie told Guinness World Records that it was essentially a family joke because she does not consider herself grumpy.
Her personality and enthusiasm have helped create a community around her Fortnite sessions, where chatting with viewers is central to her streams.
Guinness recognition brings a childhood connection
The Scottish Fortnite streamer now appears in the Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition 2027.
The achievement carries particular significance for Bowie because she grew up receiving Guinness World Records books as Christmas presents and never expected to eventually appear in one herself.
Her record also challenges the perception that gaming and livestreaming belong primarily to younger generations.
