This is the longest we've gone without a shooting victim since the beginning of the CompStat era and is a result of the brave work that the members of the NYPD do every day.
This development comes just weeks after a mass shooting in Queens on New Year’s Day left 11 injured, reminding the city of the ongoing challenges of gun violence.
However, New York City has been experiencing a steady decline in gun-related crimes. December 2024 saw no gun-related deaths, compared to nine in December 2023, according to NYPD data. Over the course of 2024, shooting incidents dropped by 7.3%, and shooting victims fell by 4.2% compared to 2023.
In broader terms, crime levels across the city have also decreased, with 3,662 fewer incidents reported in 2024 than the previous year. Jessica S. Tisch, a senior NYPD official, praised these improvements while emphasising the continued need for vigilance to ensure residents feel safe.
The NYPD’s strategy includes deploying thousands of uniformed officers to high-crime areas across the city’s five boroughs, focusing on vulnerable neighbourhoods. Experts say these targeted patrols have been pivotal in deterring crime.
While the city celebrates this historic achievement, officials and residents alike understand the importance of sustained efforts to keep communities safe. The five-day milestone marks a step forward in improving the city’s quality of life and restoring public confidence.
