KUALA LUMPUR: A burst gas pipeline ignited a massive fire in Putra Heights, Selangor, sending flames sky-high and forcing evacuations on Tuesday. The explosion, which occurred near a gas station, created an inferno visible for kilometres.
Authorities swiftly ordered nearby residential areas to be cleared as dozens of firefighters rushed to the scene to contain the blaze. Wan Mohamad Razali Wan Ismail, Selangor’s Fire Department Director, confirmed that the fire was sparked by a ruptured gas pipeline.
Videos circulating on social media showed thick plumes of smoke and intense flames engulfing the area. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud explosion before the fire erupted. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far, though assessments are still underway.
Malaysia’s authorities are now investigating the cause of the pipeline rupture, with initial suspicions pointing to structural failure or pressure build-up. Gas pipeline fires can be highly destructive, and officials are working to prevent further risks.
Emergency teams have secured the affected area, and residents have been advised to stay clear until the situation is fully under control. Gas supply to the area has been cut off as a precautionary measure to avoid further explosions.
The incident raises concerns about gas infrastructure safety, with experts calling for more rigorous checks and preventive measures to avoid such disasters in the future.
