ABU DHABI: The UAE sandstorm warning is now in effect as strong winds and blowing dust are expected to hit various parts of the country over the next few days. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) has raised an orange alert, urging residents to brace for low visibility and hazardous conditions.
The alert reads: “Be on the alert. Hazardous weather events are expected. Comply with advice issued by the authorities.”
The NCM has issued clear safety guidelines on social media, advising the public to keep windows and doors tightly shut to prevent dust from entering homes and buildings. Residents are also advised to avoid direct exposure to dust, especially those with respiratory conditions.

For those on the roads, the warning is especially important. Blowing sand and dust can reduce visibility, making driving risky. The NCM urged motorists to drive carefully, follow all road safety rules, and avoid sudden braking or lane changes during the storm.
Abu Dhabi Police have echoed the warning with a strong message to drivers: “Be cautious due to low visibility during high winds and dust. For your safety and for others, don’t use your phone or record videos while driving.”
Sandstorms are not uncommon in the UAE, especially during the changing seasons. However, this alert suggests a significant drop in visibility and potential health hazards due to the swirling dust.
Residents are advised to stay indoors as much as possible and limit outdoor activities, particularly during peak storm hours. It’s also recommended to check weather updates regularly and comply with safety instructions issued by authorities.
