The UAE has declared January 1, 2026 as an official paid holiday for private sector employees in celebration of the New Year.
ABU DHABI: The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation has confirmed that Thursday, January 1, 2026, will be an official paid holiday for all private sector workers across the United Arab Emirates. The announcement comes in line with the UAE Cabinet’s approved schedule of official holidays for the public and private sectors.
The Ministry issued a circular stating that the holiday has been granted on the occasion of the New Year, allowing employees in the private sector to enjoy a paid day off. This step is part of the country’s ongoing efforts to ensure uniformity and work-life balance across all employment sectors.
The inclusion of New Year’s Day in the holiday list also reflects the government’s broader approach to harmonise leave entitlements between public and private sector employees. It ensures that celebrations marking the start of 2026 can be enjoyed by all, reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to employee wellbeing.
Private sector businesses are encouraged to make suitable arrangements in advance to accommodate the holiday. Where continuous operations are necessary, employers are expected to compensate staff according to the UAE Labour Law.
