Sharjah: Under the leadership of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, the Emirate has made significant efforts to support people of all ages, especially the elderly. Sharjah has developed a comprehensive strategy to create an infrastructure that ensures the elderly can live comfortably and well cared for.

In a world facing social and environmental changes, Sharjah stands out for its initiatives and programs aimed at improving the welfare of all social groups. On September 13, 2016, Sharjah made history by becoming the first Arab city to join the World Health Organisation’s Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities. This membership highlights Sharjah as a leader in sustainable care for the elderly.

As part of its strategy, Sharjah integrates age-friendly standards into daily life. Asma Al Khudari, Director of the Sharjah Age-Friendly City Programme, emphasized the Emirate’s dedication to improving the quality of life for the elderly. This commitment involves cooperation between public and private institutions to apply WHO’s age-friendly standards.

Sharjah is enhancing its infrastructure to prioritize the elderly, including public transportation and pedestrian pathways, making them more accessible. The Emirate also trains the elderly to use smart devices and the internet, helping them stay connected and reducing social isolation.

Sharjah’s efforts include improving outdoor spaces and buildings, providing suitable transportation, developing housing projects, and promoting community participation and social integration for the elderly. These measures ensure the elderly can live independently and engage with society safely and comfortably.

Sharjah aims to be a global role model in elderly care, focusing on both physical and mental health. Initiatives like the Mobile Medical Clinic, which offers home nursing services and early diagnosis of chronic diseases, reflect this vision. The Emirate also provides benefits and discounts for those over sixty, enhancing their quality of life.

Through these comprehensive initiatives, Sharjah continues to build a society that values and respects the elderly, ensuring they are active and influential community members.
