The Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA) has launched new AI guidelines for all private schools in Sharjah, introducing an ethical framework to ensure responsible artificial intelligence use in education

SHARJAH: The Sharjah Private Education Authority (SPEA) has launched a new ethical framework regulating the use of artificial intelligence in educational institutions, establishing guidelines to protect student privacy, maintain academic integrity and promote responsible technology use.

The initiative aims to help schools integrate AI into teaching and learning while ensuring that technology supports rather than replaces educators.

The framework aligns with the UAE’s national priorities for digital transformation and educational development.

New rules for AI in school assignments

Under the framework, schools must establish clear guidelines governing artificial intelligence use in homework, projects and assessments.

Students must disclose AI assistance when appropriate and ensure that AI-generated material does not replace their original work.

Teachers and students must also verify AI-generated information and sources to prevent misinformation and maintain educational standards.

Student privacy and data protection prioritised

The guidelines emphasise cybersecurity, transparency, accountability and human oversight.

Schools must protect learners’ personal information while ensuring that AI applications operate within established ethical standards.

The framework also defines responsibilities for school administrators, teachers, students, IT departments, educational specialists and parents.

Teachers remain central to education

Aisha Butti Al Ghafli, Director of the Curriculum and Assessment Department at SPEA, highlighted the importance of introducing modern technologies without compromising students’ rights or teachers’ responsibilities.

The initiative also seeks to strengthen critical thinking, encourage innovation and support personalised learning.

Additionally, schools must follow standards when using AI-generated materials for institutional communications and promotions.

The authority said the framework will help educational institutions embrace emerging technologies while preserving the human role in education.
