Dubai launched the Loop and Glydways projects to advance smart mobility and improve first- and last-mile urban transport.

DUBAI: His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum reviewed two pioneering mobility initiatives at the World Governments Summit 2026. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) presented the Dubai Loop and Glydways projects as part of Dubai’s strategy to lead in smart and sustainable transport.

The Dubai Loop features a network of underground tunnels for high-efficiency passenger transport. The initial 6.4 km phase connects the Financial District to Dubai Mall through four stations. The full route will extend 22.2 km with 19 stations linking key areas including Business Bay and the Trade Centre. The system is designed for fast rollout with minimal disruption to existing roads.

The Glydways project introduces an autonomous transit network using compact electric vehicles that travel on narrow, dedicated guideways. It offers on-demand transport without intermediate stops. Each vehicle carries four to six passengers, reaches speeds of 50 km/h, and operates up to 250 km per charge. The system functions independently of regular traffic, ensuring shorter travel times in dense urban areas.

Both projects aim to reduce congestion and enhance commuter experience while supporting sustainability. The Glydways system lowers capital costs by up to 90 percent and operational costs by up to 70 percent compared to traditional transit models. It also allows flexible deployment under public–private partnerships.

Mattar Al Tayer, RTA Chairman, said these innovations reflect Dubai’s vision to build an integrated transport ecosystem. He added that they will contribute to improving quality of life and advancing Dubai’s urban and economic growth.

The Dubai Loop and Glydways projects form a key part of the city’s future mobility plan, focused on efficiency, innovation and environmental responsibility.
