Dubai RTA introduces strict rules for electric scooters on public transport, including size limits and secure storage requirements.
DUBAI: The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has released a new set of e-scooter safety standards aimed at regulating the carriage of electric scooters on public transport, ensuring safety and operational efficiency for all passengers.
According to the updated policy, only electric scooters with dimensions not exceeding 120cm x 70cm x 40cm are allowed on Dubai Metro, Tram and public buses. These scooters must be folded, dry, clean, and properly secured using approved straps in designated holding areas within the vehicle.
The Dubai e-scooter rules also restrict the number of scooters on a single trip to a maximum of two, and users must access vehicles via wide doors to avoid disruptions. Riding or charging scooters inside stations or on pedestrian bridges is now strictly prohibited.
The RTA clarified that intercity coach buses are excluded from the new scooter rules. The updated regulations are part of the authority’s strategy to manage the surge in micro-mobility usage, especially in high-density and residential neighbourhoods.
To further enhance safety, riders are advised to follow posted speed limits, wear reflective gear and helmets, and only use scooters on designated or shared paths. The aim is to reduce risks to pedestrians and promote a responsible urban commuting culture.
The transport authority emphasised that adherence to these rules supports the city’s larger mission of sustainable mobility, reducing carbon emissions and positioning Dubai as a leader in smart and safe urban transport.
