16th edition of Emirates Airline Festival of Literature commences

Dubai: The 16th edition of the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, organized by the Emirates Literature Foundation (ELF), commenced today under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai. H.H. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) and Member of the Dubai Council, graced the opening event.

This literary extravaganza, running until February 6, 2024, enjoys the support of title sponsor Emirates Airline and founding partner Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. The inaugural evening featured renowned authors and speakers, including Sir Ben Okri, Claudia Rankine, and Saud Al Sanousi, who shared insights into their journeys, reflections on the world, hopes for the future, and the transformative power of imagination.

The LitFest, offering over 200 sessions in various formats, including Conversations, Workshops, Special Events, LitFest After Hours, Discovery Talks, Family Activities, and Youth Day, kicked off with the announcement of the winners of the third cycle of First Chapter: the ELF Seddiqi Writers’ Fellowship. Notably, the fellowship has propelled aspiring writers to engage with agents and publishers, with success stories like Sara Hamdan securing a significant two-book deal with US publisher Holt-Macmillan.

Ahlam Bolooki, CEO of Emirates Literature Foundation, emphasized the festival’s celebration of individual stories and community power. She highlighted the Festival’s role in fostering a love of words, sharing ideas, and igniting joy across various segments, from LitFest Families nurturing curiosity in younger generations to the vibrant energy of LitFest After Hours.

Boutros Boutros, Divisional Senior Vice President, Corporate Communications, Marketing Brand for Emirates, expressed excitement about the LitFest, noting its growth into an essential event on Dubai’s arts and culture calendar.

The Festival boasts an impressive lineup of 160 speakers, including Emiratis like Dr. Sultan Saif AlNeyadi, Hazzaa AlMansoori, Fatma Lootah, Ali Abu Al Reesh, and Reem Al Kamali. The ‘Bil Emirati’ strand showcases local talent, contributing to the UAE’s efforts to foster a knowledge and innovation-based economy.

Dr. Saeed Mubarak Bin Kharbash, CEO of the Arts and Literature Sector at Dubai Culture, highlighted the festival’s integral role in Dubai’s community calendar. He emphasized the ‘Bil Emirati’ strand’s contribution to opening opportunities for Emirati creators and promoting cultural diversity through workshops and intellectual sessions.
