India is planning to send a robot called Vyom, into space this year
Mon 05 Feb 2024New Delhi: India is to send a robot named Vyom, into space this year as per the Minister of State for Space, Atomic Energy, Science and Technology.
This crewless robot flight will be followed in 2025 by India’s first human space flight carrying Indian astronauts.
The female robot astronaut to fly into space this year has been christened “Vyommitra”. Vyomitra, the brainchild of ISRO’s ingenuity, is not just any robot; she is a groundbreaking creation designed to assist astronauts during the Gaganyaan mission. The name “Vyomitra” itself is a fusion of two Sanskrit words: “Vyoma,” meaning space, and “Mitra,” meaning friend, signifying the crucial role this humanoid will play as a companion in the vastness of space.
Vyomitra is not your typical machine; she is designed to replicate human-like movements and responses. With a humanoid appearance, complete with arms, legs, and a head, Vyomitra is equipped to perform tasks with a level of dexterity that was previously challenging for traditional robots.
Singh said the female robot astronaut will be equipped with capabilities to monitor space module parameters, issue alerts and execute life support operations. It can simulate human functions and respond to human queries, he said.
India’s first human space flight will be called “Gaganyaan”, which means “celestial vehicle” in Sanskrit. The flight envisages sending three Indian astronauts to space to orbit the earth from a 400-km altitude on a mission of up to seven days.
