RIYADH: Saudi Arabia is pushing ahead with plans to build a new Makkah airport and metro system, in a major investment aimed at easing pilgrimage congestion and strengthening regional connectivity. The announcement signals the Kingdom’s commitment to upgrading infrastructure ahead of anticipated surges in visitor numbers for Hajj and Umrah.
The proposed airport will be located approximately 50 kilometres from Makkah and is designed to handle millions of passengers annually. The move is intended to relieve pressure on King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, which currently serves as the primary gateway for pilgrims arriving in the region. A dedicated metro system will complement the airport, providing efficient public transport within the holy city and improving access to key pilgrimage sites.
Government officials have framed the expansion as part of Saudi Arabia’s broader push to develop its tourism sector and modernise its infrastructure. The projects align closely with Vision 2030, the Kingdom’s long-term strategy to diversify the economy and reduce dependence on oil revenue.
