Dubai airport becomes the first Certified Autism Center designation

Dubai International (DXB), the world’s biggest airport for international passenger traffic, marked a historic milestone by becoming the first international airport to earn the Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) designation, awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES). This achievement highlights Dubai Airports’ unwavering commitment to elevating the travel experience and making it easier for persons with disabilities while also supporting Dubai’s pursuit of becoming a Certified Autism Destination™.

Majed Al Joker, Chief Operating Officer at Dubai Airports, expressed pride in the recognition of their commitment to an inclusive travel experience. The achievement aligns with the vision for Dubai to be a leading disability-friendly city. Collaboration with partners in the airport community has contributed to the success, ensuring a seamless experience for all guests. The certification from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) acknowledges Dubai International Airport’s efforts to understand and accommodate the needs of autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals.

Essa Bin Hadher, General Manager at Dubai College of Tourism, highlighted the importance of accessibility in achieving tourism goals. Dubai International Airport’s autism-friendly recognition is a significant step towards creating an accessible destination. Dubai College of Tourism provides training to stakeholders in the tourism industry, emphasizing inclusivity and accessibility.

The Certified Autism Center™ (CAC) designation from IBCCES is part of Dubai’s initiative to become a Certified Autism Destination™ (CAD). The certification process involved an on-site assessment of all three airport terminals. Special services, like the Sunflower Lanyard Programme, were implemented to discreetly assist People of Determination (POD) guests. The airport staff underwent a hidden disability service training and awareness program, enhancing their understanding of visible and non-visible disabilities. Additional services, such as a travel planner and dedicated assistance, contribute to Dubai International Airport’s commitment to inclusive travel.

Myron Pincomb, IBCCES Board Chairman, commended Dubai Airports for its dedication to inclusive travel experiences. The certification reflects the airport’s commitment to exceptional service and aligns with Dubai’s vision for a more accessible city. IBCCES, a leader in cognitive disorder training, provides training and certification to help organizations better accommodate and assist autistic or sensory-sensitive visitors and their families.
