SEATTLE: Macklemore Palestinian aid efforts have taken a new turn after the American rapper pledged his entire $1 million in net earnings from Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour to six organisations supporting Palestinians, days after his removal from the remaining US dates sparked a wider music industry dispute.
Macklemore announced the pledge on September 16, saying he wanted attention to return to Palestinians rather than the controversy surrounding his removal from the tour.
The six organisations named by the rapper are Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, HEAL Palestine, Gaza Soup Kitchen, Medical Aid for Palestinians, UNRWA USA National Committee and Anera.
Why is Macklemore donating his tour earnings?
The announcement follows Macklemore’s removal as an opening act from the remaining US dates of Sheeran’s Loop Tour.
The rapper had spoken in support of Palestinians during performances at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The subsequent decision to remove him became contentious, with Sheeran saying the decision was ultimately made by the tour promoter after venues objected to Macklemore remaining on the line-up.
Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium, confirmed that he opposed Macklemore performing at his venue. Kraft cited what he described as the rapper’s previous antisemitic rhetoric and imagery. Macklemore has denied accusations of antisemitism.
Macklemore challenged Kraft to match his $1 million donation, saying Palestinian lives were worth protecting.
The Macklemore Palestinian aid pledge was followed by another significant development. Kraft said Sheeran had contacted him before Macklemore’s public challenge and asked him to match a separate $2 million humanitarian commitment from the British singer.
Kraft subsequently pledged $2 million himself towards humanitarian aid in the region. Together, the three announced commitments total $5 million, although they are not necessarily being directed to the same organisations.

How has the music industry responded?
The dispute has spread beyond Macklemore and Sheeran. Finneas, Aaron Rowe, Lukas Graham and Beoga withdrew from Sheeran’s remaining US shows in solidarity with Macklemore.
Macklemore, meanwhile, said his focus would remain on Palestinian freedom, dignity and safety. His $1 million Macklemore Palestinian aid commitment shifts part of the discussion from the tour dispute towards humanitarian assistance.
