A group of people on a super yacht allegedly started a huge forest fire on one of Jeff Bezos’ favorite Greek islands by setting off fireworks during a party.

The incident occurred on the island of Hydra, where Bezos had recently celebrated Father’s Day with his fiancee Lauren Sanchez and his son Preston. The fireworks, meant to entertain guests aboard the Persefoni I yacht, led to a disastrous fire in Hydra’s pine forest.

Following the fire, more than a dozen individuals from the yacht, including crew members and passengers, were arrested. They appeared in court to face charges related to causing the wildfire. The luxury yacht, known for its extravagant amenities and a weekly rate of about $320,000, has drawn attention for the incident.

The US Embassy and Consulate in Greece had issued a warning about wildfire risks due to high temperatures in the region on the day of the incident. Greece’s Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vasilis Kikilias, has called for the seizure of the yacht. In Greece, the legal consequences for arson are severe, with potential prison sentences up to 20 years and hefty fines exceeding $200,000.

Mayor Giorgos Koukoudakis of Hydra criticized the reckless use of fireworks, especially given the windy conditions that night. He lamented the destruction of the island’s beautiful pine forest and emphasized that fireworks were banned due to the weather conditions.

The incident has sparked outrage and concerns about environmental damage and safety protocols during celebrations in sensitive areas like Hydra. Authorities are taking steps to address the aftermath of the fire and ensure accountability for those involved.
