Sharjah House of Wisdom continues strengthening cultural innovation through modern design, sustainability and interactive knowledge experiences for communities.
SHARJAH: The House of Wisdom in Sharjah continues to reinforce the emirate’s vision for cultural innovation and sustainable knowledge development through a modern architectural and community-focused learning space.
Launched by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority during Sharjah’s tenure as UNESCO World Book Capital 2019, the House of Wisdom was designed to transform reading and learning into an everyday social experience rather than a traditional library visit.
Sharjah has long positioned itself as one of the Arab world’s leading cultural centres through publishing initiatives, literary festivals, libraries and heritage projects. The emirate’s focus on knowledge and education has played a major role in strengthening its international cultural reputation over the years.
Opened in 2020, the House of Wisdom houses more than 500,000 print and digital titles alongside lecture halls, exhibition areas, laboratories and flexible learning environments. The building’s design focuses on openness, accessibility and interaction, encouraging visitors to spend more time engaging with books, discussions and creative activities.
The House of Wisdom was developed in collaboration with Foster + Partners using architectural concepts inspired by Islamic design principles while maintaining a modern and environmentally efficient structure. Its column-free interiors, filtered natural lighting and movable bamboo screens create open spaces connected to surrounding gardens and public areas.
The project also includes dedicated quiet reading zones, a Ladies’ Lounge, Braille collections and family-friendly outdoor spaces aimed at making knowledge accessible to all members of society.
Khawla Sayed Mohammed Al Hashemi, Executive Director of Projects at Shurooq, said the goal was not simply to design a building but to create a place where people continuously return and integrate learning into daily life.
Today, the House of Wisdom stands as one of Sharjah’s most recognised cultural landmarks, reflecting the emirate’s long-term commitment to education, creativity and community engagement.
