The OpenAI Samsung partnership is expanding into next-generation chip development as the companies deepen cooperation across AI infrastructure and enterprise technology.

SEOUL: The OpenAI Samsung partnership is moving deeper into semiconductor development, with the artificial intelligence company saying it is working with Samsung Electronics on next-generation chips as demand for computing infrastructure continues to accelerate.

Harrison Kim, General Manager of OpenAI Korea, said the companies have made significant progress in chip production and research, Reuters reported on September 9. The development builds on an existing relationship spanning advanced memory semiconductors, AI infrastructure and the use of OpenAI technology within Samsung.

No new agreement was announced, making the development an expansion of existing cooperation rather than a separate semiconductor deal.

Why are OpenAI and Samsung working together?

Running increasingly capable AI models requires enormous amounts of computing power and advanced memory.

That has made semiconductor manufacturers an important part of the global AI race, particularly companies capable of producing the high-performance memory required by large data centres.

Samsung Electronics and OpenAI already have an established infrastructure relationship. Samsung previously agreed to help supply advanced memory semiconductors required for OpenAI’s next-generation AI infrastructure.

The OpenAI Samsung partnership could now expand further as the companies explore next-generation chip technologies and additional enterprise AI services.

OpenAI has also been developing its own AI chip strategy. Reuters reported that the company previously developed an AI chip with Broadcom, with manufacturing handled by TSMC, as it seeks greater control over the computing infrastructure supporting its models.

How is Samsung using OpenAI technology?

The relationship extends beyond semiconductor manufacturing.

Samsung Electronics announced a major deployment of ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex in June, making the tools available to all Samsung Electronics employees in South Korea and employees worldwide within its Device eXperience division.

OpenAI described the deployment as one of its largest enterprise launches. Samsung plans to use the technology across research and development, manufacturing, software development, product development, marketing and corporate functions.

South Korea has also become an important market for OpenAI’s enterprise business. Reuters reported that ChatGPT Enterprise users in the country have increased sharply over the past year.
