India to establish cyber criminals registry and train 5,000 commandos
Wed 11 Sep 2024NEW DELHI: India announced plans to create a nationwide registry of suspected cyber criminals and to train around 5,000 “cyber commandos” over the next five years. This new initiative aims to enhance the country’s ability to tackle cybercrime effectively.
The establishment of this national registry is intended to prevent future cybercrimes by maintaining a comprehensive list of suspects. Additionally, the training programme will focus on equipping a specialized force to address various cyber threats and crimes.
The announcement was made during the first foundation day celebration of the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), which serves as the central body for coordinating efforts to combat cybercrime across the nation. As part of its activities, I4C is launching a nationwide awareness campaign on cybercrime to educate the public and strengthen digital security.
Highlighting the significance of online safety, it was noted that 46 percent of digital transactions globally occur in India. To support these efforts, I4C has issued over 600 advisories and has taken action to block numerous websites, social media pages, mobile apps, and accounts associated with cybercriminal activities.
