The Blue Peace initiative took centre stage at Expo 2020 Dubai, highlighting how young people can help shape a more water-secure future through innovation and global collaboration.
DUBAI: Can young people help solve one of the world’s biggest challenges? Switzerland believes they can. At Expo 2020 Dubai, the Swiss Pavilion wrapped up Water Month with an inspiring discussion focused on youth engagement, water security and the power of collaboration to build a more sustainable future.
The Brew News Feature Editor Babar Siddiqui spoke with Soraya Kohler, Project Manager of the Global Programme Water at the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), to learn more about the Blue Peace initiative and why empowering young people has become central to tackling global water challenges.

During the conversation, Kohler explained that water is much more than a natural resource. It is closely linked to peace, economic development and international cooperation. Through the Blue Peace initiative, Switzerland is encouraging countries to work together on managing shared water resources, promoting dialogue instead of conflict and creating long-term solutions that benefit communities across borders.
A major focus of the discussion was the role of young people in shaping a more sustainable future. With the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda serving as a global roadmap, participants agreed that the next generation has both the creativity and determination needed to develop innovative solutions for water conservation and climate resilience.

The panel brought together representatives from organisations including the World Youth Parliament for Water and the 1 Million Youth Action Challenge. These youth-led initiatives showcased how young innovators are already making a difference by raising awareness, developing practical solutions and encouraging communities to take action on water-related issues.
The event also created opportunities for governments, international organisations, researchers and young leaders to exchange ideas and strengthen partnerships. Rather than working in isolation, participants highlighted the importance of collaboration in addressing global water challenges that affect millions of people around the world.

Speaking during the event, Swiss Pavilion Commissioner General Manuel Salchli reaffirmed Switzerland’s commitment to water diplomacy and sustainable resource management. He noted that initiatives such as the Blue Peace initiative demonstrate how international cooperation can help countries manage shared water resources while promoting peace and stability.
In his interview with The Brew News, Kohler also stressed that investing in young people today means investing in a more resilient tomorrow. By giving youth a seat at the table and supporting their ideas, governments and organisations can accelerate progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
As conversations around climate change and water security continue to grow, the message from the Swiss Pavilion was clear: lasting solutions will require cooperation, innovation and the active participation of young people. Through initiatives like Blue Peace initiative, Switzerland hopes to inspire a new generation of leaders ready to protect one of the planet’s most valuable resources.
