New York City: Laundry and dishwasher detergent pods containing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) are adding to the plastic pollution problem in waterways across the US.

In response to this environmental concern, New York City is considering regulations to restrict the sale of detergent pods and sheets containing PVA. City Council Member James Gennaro introduced a bill proposing a ban on these products, aiming to take effect on January 1, 2026.

Gennaro emphasized the need for scientific input to address the impact of PVA on aquatic ecosystems, expressing concerns about its consequences.

Although detergent pods and sheets may seem to dissolve during washing, PVA is essentially a type of plastic. The bill highlights the widespread presence of microplastics and nanoplastics in US water bodies, noting their detrimental effects on the environment. These minute plastic particles, found in various places including paint, glaciers, and even rain, are becoming increasingly pervasive. According to a 2018 study, over 700,000 tons of PVA are produced annually worldwide, with the production rate increasing by 4% each year.

By proposing this legislation, New York City aims to address the growing issue of plastic pollution and mitigate its impact on water ecosystems.
