ABU DHABI: The UAE’s first joint Antarctic expedition, in collaboration with the Bulgarian Antarctic Research Institute, has successfully returned after completing a pioneering scientific mission. This historic achievement underscores the UAE’s commitment to global scientific research, strengthening international partnerships in meteorology and climate science.

Two UAE experts specialising in meteorology and seismic monitoring braved one of the world’s harshest environments to install advanced weather and seismic monitoring stations. These stations will enhance the accuracy of weather forecasting and seismic monitoring, contributing crucial climate data for global research.

Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Chair of the Emirates Polar Programme, praised the scientists, stating, “Their mission marks a major achievement for the UAE in scientific exploration and highlights the power of international collaboration in climate research.” She added that the Emirates Polar Programme will continue to foster global partnerships, ensuring further scientific contributions in both Antarctica and the Arctic.

The team underwent intensive medical training before facing freezing temperatures, harsh winds, and extreme isolation. Despite the challenges, they collected critical climate data, studied ice melting and its impact on sea levels, and examined the polar climate’s influence on global weather patterns.

Using virtual reality technology, the expedition was fully documented, offering an interactive experience that showcases the installation of monitoring stations, challenges faced, and scientific breakthroughs.

Dr. Abdullah Al Mandous, Director-General of the National Center of Meteorology, hailed the success, stating, “This mission strengthens the UAE’s leadership in climate science and international collaboration. The collected data will improve weather forecasts and support global climate change efforts.”

The UAE’s investment in polar research highlights its role in combatting climate change and promoting science-based solutions for a sustainable future. This groundbreaking initiative reinforces the nation’s commitment to environmental sustainability and climate adaptation efforts.
