SEOUL: South Korea’s foreign reserves are heading in the right direction again.

The country’s foreign exchange reserves increased for the second consecutive month, reaching US$427.95 billion at the end of July, according to the Bank of Korea.

The latest figures show reserves grew by US$590 million compared with June, following another increase of US$370 million the previous month.

So, what’s behind the rise?

According to the central bank, the increase was mainly driven by the issuance of foreign exchange stabilisation bonds and a higher US dollar value of foreign currency deposits as financial markets became more stable.

Foreign currency deposits recorded the biggest jump, rising by US$860 million to US$23.13 billion.

The value of the country’s Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), an international reserve asset managed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), also increased slightly to US$15.7 billion.

Meanwhile, South Korea’s gold reserves remained unchanged at US$4.79 billion.

Foreign exchange reserves are an important indicator of a country’s financial strength. They help governments stabilise their currencies, manage external shocks and reassure investors during periods of global uncertainty.

South Korea continues to maintain one of the world’s largest foreign reserve holdings, giving policymakers greater flexibility to respond to changes in global financial markets.

The latest increase suggests that the country’s financial position remains stable despite ongoing uncertainty in the global economy.
