MOSCOW/KIEV: Tensions have sharply risen between Russia and Ukraine in the past 24 hours, with a significant uptick in military activity reported on both sides. The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that it had successfully intercepted and destroyed 133 drones in a sweeping defence operation across ten regions.

According to the Russian statement, 93 drones were downed overnight, including 19 around the capital, Moscow. This follows the interception of 40 drones on Saturday evening, signalling a continued wave of Ukrainian aerial activity. The escalation highlights the evolving tactics being employed in the ongoing conflict.

In contrast, Ukraine’s military reported heavy losses inflicted on Russian forces. The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine estimated Russian personnel losses to have reached over one million since the beginning of the conflict, with more than 1,040 killed or injured in just the past 24 hours, according to Ukrinform.

Amid the military developments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a proposal for renewed peace talks with Moscow. He stressed the need to accelerate diplomatic efforts, stating, “The dynamics of the negotiations must improve. We need to do everything possible to achieve a ceasefire.” He further noted Ukraine’s readiness for a leadership-level meeting aimed at securing a potential ceasefire.
