A New Year fire at Le Constellation nightclub in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, killed dozens and injured around 100, prompting national emergency response.
BERN: A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of New Year’s Day at a popular nightclub in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, leaving dozens dead and approximately 100 injured, many seriously, according to local police. The incident occurred at Le Constellation, a crowded venue known for attracting international guests during the festive season.
The blaze began around 1:30 am, quickly engulfing the premises as emergency services rushed to the scene. Videos captured by a tourist showed flames pouring from the building, with people screaming and fleeing in panic. The incident has shocked Switzerland, particularly as Crans-Montana is one of its most prestigious ski resorts.
Police Commander Frederic Gisler confirmed that a large number of victims sustained critical injuries. Hospitals across the Wallis region declared a state of emergency, transferring patients to medical facilities nationwide to manage the sudden influx.
Authorities confirmed that the cause of the fire remains under investigation but stated it is not considered a terror-related incident. Swiss media reports suggest pyrotechnics used during a concert may have triggered the blaze, although this has yet to be officially confirmed.
Given Crans-Montana’s international popularity, the victims are believed to represent multiple nationalities. The area remains closed to the public, and a no-fly zone has been imposed as investigations continue.
This tragedy has cast a shadow over New Year celebrations in the region and sparked discussions around fire safety regulations at high-capacity entertainment venues.
