ABU DHABI: The UAE Council for Fatwa has announced that Zakat Al Fitr can be given in cash, setting the recommended amount at AED 25 per person for 1446 AH. This confirmation aligns with Islamic teachings while offering convenience to those fulfilling this annual charitable duty.
Zakat Al Fitr is a mandatory obligation for all financially capable Muslims, regardless of age or gender. The head of the household is responsible for paying it on behalf of their spouse, children, and dependents. Traditionally, it has been given in staple food items, but cash payments are now widely accepted for ease of distribution.
In a statement issued ahead of Eid Al Fitr, the Council reaffirmed the obligation of Zakat Al Fitr, citing the hadith of Ibn Omar: “Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) has made Sadaqat Al Fitr obligatory, (and it was), either one Sa’ of barley or one Sa’ of dates.”
According to the UAE Council for Fatwa, Zakat Al Fitr amounts to 2.5 kilograms of rice per person. However, individuals can choose to give it in kind (as rice) or opt for the cash equivalent. This flexibility ensures that the aid reaches those in need in the most effective manner.
The Council’s ruling reflects a growing trend in many Islamic communities, where monetary contributions help charities distribute aid more efficiently. As Eid Al Fitr approaches, Muslims are encouraged to fulfil this obligation before the holiday prayer, ensuring their contributions benefit those in need on time.
