The UAE Cybersecurity Council has urged the public to remain vigilant against AI-generated deepfake content that can mislead and harm.
ABU DHABI: The UAE Cybersecurity Council has issued a public advisory warning citizens and residents about the growing threat of deepfake videos and audio clips, which use artificial intelligence to convincingly mimic real people’s voices and appearances.
The Council stated that with the rapid advancement of AI tools, deepfake technology has become more sophisticated, allowing creators to produce highly realistic content that can deceive viewers. These manipulated videos or audio recordings often impersonate public figures, potentially spreading disinformation or damaging the reputation of national institutions.
To counter this, the Council has urged the public to act responsibly when consuming and sharing digital media. Users are advised to verify the authenticity of any content—especially those linked to government entities or well-known individuals—through official and trusted channels before sharing.
Highlighting the importance of digital literacy, the Council stressed that raising public awareness about the risks associated with deepfake technology is crucial. It described this as the “first line of defence” in safeguarding the UAE’s digital space and maintaining the integrity of its national symbols.
Furthermore, the Council reminded the public that under Federal Decree-Law No. (34) of 2021 on Countering Rumours and Cybercrimes, strict penalties are imposed on individuals involved in creating or spreading deceptive content. These measures aim to protect society from the dangers of fake news, online fraud, and cybercrime.
As deepfake content becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish from real media, UAE authorities continue to enhance cybersecurity frameworks and encourage digital vigilance as part of national efforts to secure online platforms.
