ABU DHABI: The UAE has renewed its call for regional de-escalation and diplomatic solutions following a telephone conversation between Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.
During the November 5 call, both ministers reviewed regional developments and the broader security situation. Sheikh Abdullah stressed the importance of reducing tensions and advancing diplomatic efforts to support regional peace and stability.
The discussions came amid concerns over renewed confrontation between Iran and the United States and continuing maritime security challenges in the Gulf.
UAE Strengthens Diplomatic Coordination with Qatar
Sheikh Abdullah also held separate talks with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani.
The ministers discussed bilateral cooperation and regional developments, focusing on diplomatic coordination and efforts to reduce tensions.
Qatar reaffirmed its support for diplomatic initiatives that protect freedom of maritime navigation and help secure a comprehensive agreement for lasting regional peace.
Strait of Hormuz Security Remains a Concern
The diplomatic discussions followed reports of maritime incidents involving oil tankers near the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran claimed several tankers had caught fire after encountering naval mines. However, independent confirmation of those claims remained limited.
The strategically important waterway has faced repeated security concerns amid tensions involving Iran and the United States.
UAE Reaffirms Commitment to Diplomacy
Earlier, UAE Presidential Diplomatic Adviser Dr Anwar Gargash said the country sought to prevent renewed military confrontation through dialogue. Speaking at the Manama Dialogue in Bahrain, he emphasised the importance of diplomacy in preventing further regional instability.
The latest ministerial conversations underline continued Gulf diplomatic engagement as regional governments seek to prevent further escalation.
Impact to Expect
Continued UAE-Iran diplomatic engagement could support regional stability and reduce the risk of further confrontation. Coordination with Qatar may also strengthen mediation efforts and maritime security discussions.
