UAE heritage sites ICESCO earn historic recognition as five cultural landmarks join the Islamic World Tangible Heritage list.

ABU DHABI: UAE heritage sites ICESCO earn historic recognition following the inscription of five cultural landmarks on the Islamic World Tangible Heritage list. The announcement was made during the 13th session of the Islamic World Heritage Committee held in Uzbekistan, reinforcing the country’s growing international heritage profile.

The newly listed sites include Saruq Al Hadid in Dubai and four locations in Sharjah: Al Faya in the central region, the historic towers and forts of Khorfakkan, Al Nahwa and Wadi Al Helo. The decision highlights the archaeological depth and cultural diversity of the Emirates, spanning prehistoric settlements, ancient mining hubs and defensive coastal architecture.

Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of Culture, described the inscription as a significant milestone that reflects the UAE’s commitment to safeguarding its historical assets and promoting sustainable heritage preservation. He emphasised continued efforts to document and protect national sites while strengthening the presence of Emirati heritage on international platforms.

Saruq Al Hadid, discovered in 2002, dates back to the Early Bronze Age and is recognised as one of the most important ancient metal production centres in the south eastern Arabian Peninsula. Excavations have revealed thousands of artefacts including bronze tools, ornaments and weapons, confirming its advanced industrial role during the Iron Age.

In Sharjah, the Faya Palaeolandscape preserves evidence of early human settlement, while Wadi Al Helo reflects ancient copper mining traditions. The historic forts of Khorfakkan demonstrate centuries of defensive engineering, and Al Nahwa features significant rock carvings documented using advanced digital preservation techniques.

With UAE heritage sites ICESCO earn historic recognition marking this milestone, the country continues strengthening cultural leadership across the Islamic world.
