Sharjah Ruler has launched a new AED500 million exhibitions and conventions centre project set to open in November 2027, providing a new home for the Sharjah International Book Fair and major future events.
SHARJAH: His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, has unveiled plans for a state-of-the-art Exhibitions and Conventions Centre, with construction scheduled to begin imminently. The AED500 million facility is expected to be completed within 22 months and will serve as the new venue for the Sharjah International Book Fair starting in 2027.
The announcement was made during a live segment on the Direct Line programme on Sharjah Radio and Television. His Highness explained that the project was initially intended for a site near Sharjah Mosque, but due to unsuitable ground conditions, the location was revised. A new strategic site has been acquired for AED146 million near the Emirates–Al Dhaid–Khorfakkan roads, offering enhanced traffic management and accessibility.
The move aims to expand Sharjah’s capacity to host large-scale cultural and commercial exhibitions. The new venue will not only accommodate the iconic Sharjah International Book Fair but will also support events such as the Xposure International Photography Festival, which has already been scheduled for the site.
While the new centre will focus on cultural and large-scale public events, Expo Centre Sharjah will continue operating as a commercial exhibition venue, ensuring a robust events calendar for the emirate.
Traffic flow and infrastructure are also being prioritised. His Highness mentioned ongoing efforts to manage congestion during high-attendance events, and future enhancements including a proposed train station near the Al Khulafa Al Rashideen crossroads on Al Wahda Street to improve connectivity across Sharjah.
The project is expected to strengthen Sharjah’s position as a leading cultural and exhibitions destination in the region, offering modern infrastructure and dedicated space for future-ready programming.
