Dubai’s Crown Prince inaugurates Hewi Nad Al Sheba, a new space under the Hewi Dubai initiative that revives traditional neighbourhood values and social connection.
DUBAI: H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, attended the inauguration of Hewi Nad Al Sheba, the first space launched under the Hewi Dubai initiative. The project reflects Dubai’s efforts to revive traditional neighbourhood values by offering community spaces that encourage connection, interaction, and belonging.
The term ‘Hewi’ refers to an outdoor home space common in Emirati neighbourhoods, where families and neighbours gather naturally. The initiative is a collaboration between the Dubai Future Foundation, Dubai Municipality, and Ferjan Dubai. Its purpose is to create inclusive areas that enhance social ties, promote wellbeing, and support local families and businesses.
Sheikh Hamdan said the initiative aims to reconnect generations by reviving the sense of community that shaped earlier Emirati society. He emphasised that improving quality of life for residents remains a top priority, with Hewi spaces offering quiet areas for elders and safe, engaging environments for children.
The Hewi Nad Al Sheba site has been designed to encourage daily use by people of all ages. It includes features such as Al Decha, a calm space near the mosque; Al Saaha, a flexible venue for events and celebrations; and Al Yalsa, a seating area for parents overlooking children’s play areas. Walking paths and natural elements have also been added to promote outdoor movement and interaction.
Built using sustainable materials like limestone, sand, and rammed earth, the design avoids excessive use of concrete. Native trees such as sidr and tamarisk enhance the local identity of the space.
To mark the opening, a schedule of events has been organised. Highlights include a heritage-themed art exhibition in collaboration with Erth Dubai, traditional games shared by senior citizens, and interactive craft and wellness activities. The community-driven programme also includes pop-up retail and sports sessions that promote active living.
