NEW DELHI: The Indian diaspora has officially been ranked as the world’s largest, with 35.4 million people of Indian origin spread across the globe. This figure was revealed in a written reply by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita in the Lok Sabha, India’s lower house of Parliament.
The 35.4 million-strong community comprises 15.9 million Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)—Indian passport holders working or doing business abroad, mainly in the Gulf—and 19.5 million Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) who have taken up citizenship in other countries.
The Indian government has been actively engaging with its vast overseas population, recognising their contributions to India’s economy and global standing. Remittances, trade, investments, cultural exchanges, and knowledge transfer are key areas where the diaspora plays a crucial role in strengthening India’s ties with the world.
Minister Margherita described the diaspora as an invaluable asset, highlighting how their influence and success benefit India’s global image. “The Overseas Indian community is a bridge that helps propel India’s progress, fostering deeper economic and cultural ties worldwide,” he stated.
India has been strategically leveraging its diaspora through initiatives such as the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, overseas voting rights for NRIs, and economic collaboration programs. With strong networks in countries like the US, UK, Canada, and the Gulf, the diaspora remains a vital force in shaping India’s global partnerships.
