Aishwarya Rai Bachchan secured a ₹4 crore win in a 2022–23 tax case, with Mumbai’s ITAT ruling in her favour.
MUMBAI: Bollywood icon Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has won a high-profile tax case against the Indian Income Tax Department, with the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) in Mumbai ruling decisively in her favour. The dispute involved a ₹4 crore tax demand related to the Assessment Year 2022–23, which the tribunal has now struck down.
According to official filings, Aishwarya had declared a total income of ₹39 crore for the assessment year in question. The contention arose over her sizable investments in tax-free assets, reportedly valued at ₹449 crore. These investments, falling under exempt categories such as tax-free bonds and other non-taxable instruments, were well-documented and declared in her filings.
The ITAT noted that the tax department had not provided sufficient grounds to dispute the legitimacy of her tax-free income sources. The tribunal concluded that the reassessment demand lacked merit and upheld Aishwarya’s declaration as accurate and compliant with prevailing tax laws.
The verdict has been hailed as a significant legal win for the actress, reflecting both sound financial planning and proper tax disclosure. Experts say this ruling could set a precedent for high-net-worth individuals and celebrities often targeted for reassessment under India’s stringent tax regime.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, known internationally for her acting career and brand endorsements, has consistently ranked among the top-earning Indian celebrities. Her investments in tax-free assets are seen as a strategic financial move, taking advantage of legal exemptions while maintaining transparency.
While the ruling brings closure to this particular case, it also highlights the growing scrutiny of celebrity finances in India and the importance of robust legal defence when facing aggressive tax queries. For Aishwarya, this win reinforces her reputation not just in cinema, but in responsible financial stewardship as well.
