SHARJAH: His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, attended the opening of the 8th edition of the Desert Theatre Festival on Friday. The event, held in the Al Khohaif area, will continue until December 17.

The festival features a blend of traditional and contemporary theatrical performances that celebrate the Arabian desert environment, customs, and culture. Notable figures, including H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, were present to witness the occasion.

The Ruler of Sharjah attended the performance of his own theatrical work, “The Robe Dyed in Blood,” a three-act depiction of the life of the Arab poet Bashir bin ’Awana. The play focuses on themes of courage, love, and devotion, portraying the poet’s pursuit of his cousin Fatima. It reflects the bravery and dedication that define Arab culture, with poetry serving as the vessel for these timeless stories.

Directed by Mohammed Al Ameri, the production involved a large ensemble of actors and performers from across the Arab world, supported by skilled technicians. The show blended poetry, storytelling, and dramatic visuals to bring the essence of Arab culture to life.

The festival’s schedule includes a diverse array of performances, including Tunisian, Jordanian, Egyptian, and Mauritanian plays, each followed by critical discussions on their themes and styles. The event is also hosting intellectual discussions on December 14 and 15, focusing on the influence of the festival on the Arab theatre scene.
