DUBAI: An all-women Dahi Handi team from Indian Women in Dubai made history at India Club on September 5, 2026, successfully forming a human pyramid and breaking the traditional matka on its third attempt before a crowd of more than 1,000 people.
The celebration brought women to the centre of a tradition known for teamwork, balance and trust. According to organisers, the participating women came from varied backgrounds and included mothers, daughters, entrepreneurs and caregivers.
Their challenge was far from effortless. The team climbed three times and fell during its first two attempts. After each unsuccessful effort, participants regrouped, rebuilt the pyramid and climbed again as spectators encouraged them.
On the third attempt, they reached the suspended matka and broke it, bringing the challenge to a successful conclusion.
“This Dahi Handi was more than a matka. It was a statement. A statement that when women come together, we rise higher,” said Reema Mahajan, Founder of Indian Women in Dubai.
The evening also showcased Indian cultural traditions through music and performance. Swamini Dhol Tasha, an all-women Dhol Tasha group, led the opening procession, while celebrity DJ Buddha provided music and entertainment during the celebrations.
For Indian Women in Dubai, however, the event carried a message beyond completing the physical challenge.
“Never mistake our softness for weakness. When we trust each other, we become stronger. And when we stand on each other’s shoulders, there is no limit to how high we can go,” Mahajan said.
The all-women Dahi Handi performance highlighted how a traditional community celebration can also provide a platform for participation, confidence and collective achievement among women.
The event was hosted by India Club, Dubai, with the participating team supported by spectators throughout its repeated attempts to reach the matka.
Impact to expect
The achievement could encourage greater participation by women in community and cultural celebrations across the UAE, while giving traditional events a fresh way to engage younger families and multicultural audiences.
