ABU DHABI: ne’ma, the UAE’s National Food Loss and Waste Initiative, has partnered with Taste of Abu Dhabi 2024 as the official “Food Waste Reduction Partner.” This collaboration will raise awareness and promote food waste solutions at the popular culinary festival, set for November 15-17 at Gateway Park South, Yas Island. With an expected attendance of around 17,000, the event aims to educate attendees on reducing food waste at home and within the community.

During the three-day festival, ne’ma will work closely with chefs, restaurants, and vendors to manage food waste effectively. Visitors will learn about the causes of food waste and explore practical ways to reduce it, offering insights that can be easily applied in daily routines.

To further its mission, ne’ma is partnering with ReLoop to compost food scraps and organic materials from the event, creating nutrient-rich compost for local farms. This initiative is part of ne’ma’s strategy to divert waste from landfills and promote sustainable practices nationwide.

Khuloud Hasan Al Nuwais, Chief Sustainability Officer of Emirates Foundation and Secretary-General of ne’ma’s Steering Committee, highlighted the importance of such partnerships. “Food waste in the UAE is estimated at 3.5 million tonnes annually. By collaborating with Taste of Abu Dhabi, ne’ma can engage the community directly, setting a new standard for event organisers to reduce their environmental impact. Through practical solutions and awareness efforts, we aim to influence individual habits and foster a broader cultural shift in food consumption.”

Taste of Abu Dhabi representatives also expressed pride in the collaboration, noting their commitment to using the festival’s platform to support the fight against food waste and foster sustainable initiatives.

Through partnerships, advocacy, and outreach, ne’ma envisions a UAE where food is valued and waste is minimised.
